Air pollution in the news

Several reports concerning air pollution have appeared in the news recently:



Will Duke Energy shut down coal plants?

The Charlotte Observer reported that Duke Energy has agreed with environmental groups to shut down several of its older, less efficient coal plants as part of its merger with Progress Energy. The Charlotte Creative Loafing also reported that Duke may shut down the old Riverbend plant near Charlotte.

Federal court reject attempt to repeal cement kiln regulations

The Wrightsville Beach Lumina News reported that a federal court has rejected the Portland Cement Association's attempt to repeal limitations on pollutants from cement kilns. The Southern Environmental Law Center represented three organizations: Cape Fear Riverwatch, the North Carolina Coastal Federation, and PenderWatch and Conservancy.

Study ranks NC as number 11 in toxic emissions from power plants

According to a story in the Triangle Business Journal, a report compiled by the Sierra Club and Earthjustice, North Carolina is 11th in toxic emissions from power plants.

Time Magazine: Fighting air pollution one of "Top 10 Green Trends"

A story in Time magazine listed fighting air pollution as one of the top trends, and referred to the efforts of the Sierra Club.
