The NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) recently released a report “Sate of the Environment” about how the state
is protecting its water, air, and land. According to the report, the air is
cleaner and we are putting less raw sewage into our waters. However, the report
points out that population growth is causing other pollution problems and
straining drinking water supplies.
Environmental groups gave the report mixed reviews. The
executive director of the NC Coastal Federation said (according to a News &
Observer story) that the didn’t think the report was specific enough for
legislators to use to decide what programs and issues need more money, and that
the report would have been a good chance for DENR to show the legislator where
money could be best used. According to the News & Observer report, Dan
Crawford of the NC League of Conservation Voters understood why DENR did not
use the report to complain about funding cuts. He felt that DENR had to be
cautious.
